It turns out there is a very real side to the some digital assistants that were projected to make our day-to-day lives stress-free. Researchers at Zhejiang Academy exposed it is possible to flex control over Siri, Alexa, and others using a method called DolphinAttacks. A voice controlled devices such as smart phones, automobile systems, and smart speakers become increasingly popular, hackers are coming up with advanced ways of pointing them. Now, a team of researchers has shown off a method that uses ultrasonic frequencies sounds so high that they’re quiet to humans.

In short, you probably don’t have to worry about your virtual assistant, unfortunately, draining your bank account to a close by the hacker, at least for now.
The scientists’ report is fairly in depth, and it shows how the team was able to use rates above 20 kHz to deliver silent information that aims the devices acted upon. These were played back using a standard smartphone armed with an amp, ultrasonic transducer, and an extra battery, all of which costs less than $3. The DolphinAttacks are limited by a number of factors including background noise and proximity. An attacker would not only need to be very close to a target device but would need a very quiet environment to successfully activate the exposure.
The instructions they were tested on 16 devices and seven systems, with digital assistants like Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, Samsung S Voice, Cortana, and the navigation system in Audi cars. The team said: “the noiseless voice commands can be correctly read by the SR (speech recognition) systems on all the verified hardware.” In spite of the unlikelihood of a successful DolphinAttacks, the researchers recommend creators to place an upper limit on the frequencies to which digital assistants react. But with both Google Chromecast and Amazon Dash buttons trusting on ultrasonic rates for the determinations of combining, it’s unlikely that such a limit will be introduced. While altering a system so it ignores instructions over a positive frequency might look like a simple solution, manufacturing designer Gadi Amit said fast Company that doing so could lower its understanding score, while some devices use it for ultrasonic pairing.
